LAS VEGAS — Hawai'i Pacific University shot 304 on Tuesday, bettering five teams in the final round of the 2018 Las Vegas Desert Classic at the Royal Links Golf Club.
Despite the Sharks play, HPU remained at the bottom of the field finishing with a three-round total of 955, five strokes behind 17th place Southern Indiana at 950.
West Florida, the No. 1 team in the Golfstat rankings, tallied a 3-under-par total of 285 in the final round to win the tournament at 6-under 858. No. 45 Oklahoma Christian finished second at 886, one stroke ahead of third place Grand Valley State at 887 and two above No. 28 Arkansas Tech in fourth at 888.
Junior
Chad Vander Dussen of Rancho Murieta, Calif./Pleasant Grove, led the Sharks and had HPU's best round of the tournament, firing a 1-over 73 on the par 72, 6962 yard layout that features replica holes from some of Scotland's great courses. Vander Dussen finished with a three-round total of 231.
Sophomore
Aniruddh Kedlaya of Bangalore, India, also played well on Tuesday carding a 2-over 74, the second-best round for the team in the tournament, finishing with a 243. Junior
Minsu Lee of San Jose, Calif./Willow Glen, and junior
Masato Yoshitsugu of Aichi, Japan, tied at 241. Yoshitsugu turned in a 6-over 78 and Lee a 7-over 79 in the final round. Junior
Chris McKnight of Wilton, Calif./Cosumnes Oaks, posted an 84 to finish at 255.
West Florida's Chandler Blanchet, ranked fifth in Division II individually, added a 4-under 68 in the last round to win by 11 strokes at 16-under 200. Yente Van Doren of Lindenwood (Mo.) shot a 1-under 71 for a 5-under 211 to take second and Erik Edwards of Indianapolis shot a 3-under 69 to grab third at 4-under 212.
The Sharks are back in action next week at the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, Calif.
