St. Joseph, MO (5/28/10) – At the NCAA Division II Softball College World Series, HPU defeated Angelo State University, 1-0, to inch closer to the program's first NCAA national title. In a 10-inning affair, Sherise Musquiz (32-3) won her second game of the tournament to move HPU one win away from the national title game.
“Today was a very good game and I think the fans got their money's worth,” said HPU Coach
Bryan Nakasone. “It's too bad somebody had to lose. Both pitchers were throwing great games out there and the defenses were working pretty well. Sorry somebody had to lose, just glad it wasn't us.”
HPU scored the game's only run in the top of the 10th inning, as Kozy Toriano (2-4, 1 R) raced home from third on an errant throw by Angelo State catcher Kacie Easley (1-4). Musquiz, Breanne Patton, and Ciera Senas recorded base hits, with Casey Sugihara adding one double. Chelsea Nelson (28-9) was tagged with the loss for the Rams, surrendering no earned runs on six hits.
Kaycee Taylor and Brittany Astle each recorded two hits to lead ASU.
“We are in a good position now but we have been on the other side,” added Nakasone. “It takes a lot for these other teams to get back and win but I see it in their eyes – it's a matter of who wants it more. I am glad we are in this position, at least we get a days rest.”
HPU next plays on Sunday, May 30, at 2:30 p.m. Central Time against an opponent yet to be determined. The game can be heard live on the Internet at www.redzonemedia.com and will be simulcast on AM 1500 radio in Hawai'i. The tournament will run through Memorial Day with the title game schedule for a live television broadcast on CBS College Sports.
