HPU Women Win Conference Opener, Win Streak Now At Six

Honolulu, HI (1/10/11) – In the conference lid-lifter the Lady Sea Warriors defeated Notre Dame de Namur 74-66. HPU is now 7-3 and 1-0 in the Pac West; conversely NDNU falls to 6-7 and 3-1 in the conference.

HPU turned in a group effort, with four players posting double figures. HPU's leading scorer was again junior Mana Hopkins, who dropped 18 points, all in the second half. Hopkins shot a blistering 5-6 from the field in the half. Hopkins got others involved early on with five first half assists, on her way to seven for the game. Senior Courtney Buster registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and a game-high two blocks.

Senior Katie Zasly scored 22 points for NDNU in a losing effort, playing all but three minutes of the game.

It was a seesaw affair early, but HPU staked claim to a seven point advantage on Junior Paris Gravely's layup with 4:33 left in the first half. At the break HPU led 33-28. Sharp shooting from three point range (3-5) helped HPU's cause in the first half.

Although the game remained tight in the second half, HPU never relinquished the lead, leading by as many as 11.

HPU was stellar from the field shooting 48% for the game and 50% from distance. HPU was also stingy on defense limiting NDNU to just 33% from the field.

Junior Taiyande Huskey added 12 points for HPU, while Sophomore Melody Ladrido poured in 10, including 2-3 from three point land.

HPU next will take on Academy of Art on Wednesday January 12 at the Neil S. Blaisdell Center. Tip time is set for 5:30 p.m.
