HPU Women’s Basketball Leads Wire to Wire, Now Winners of Eight Straight

Laie, HI (1/14/11) – The Lady Sea Warriors continue to roll. HPU defeated Dominican University 66-56 with smothering defense, tough rebounding, and a balanced offensive attack. The win improved HPU's conference record to 3-0 and 9-3 overall. DUC dropped to 3-11, 1-3. The game was played at the Cannon Activities Center.

Senior Jazzmin Awa-Williams registered a game-high 15 points in just 17 minutes of play. Juniors Mana Hopkins and Taylor Craig scored 11 and 10 respectively. Senior Courtney Buster continues her rebounding onslaught in the New Year with a game- high 13 rebounds. Buster also had a game-high four assists.

Senior Kelsey Janusch led DUC with 14 points.                                                         

The Sea Warriors came out of the gate fast, establishing an 11 point lead by the 13:22 mark. By the half, HPU led 37-21 on the strength of crisp passing, and a robust 54% shooting effort from the field. HPU kept up the pressure, establishing leads of 24 two different times in the second half.

HPU has won 12 straight games played in the month of January, dating back to last season.  

HPU retakes the floor this Sunday January 16th at the Neil Blaisdell Center. Tip time against UH-Hilo is set for 5:30 p.m. and can be seen on KWHE-TV.

Notes: HPU controlled the boards throughout, winning the battle 42-29……The aggressive offense led to 30 free throw attempts……HPU spread out the wealth, with every dressed player seeing action……Ten women saw double-digit minutes……HPU's defense limited DUC to a 32% field goal percentage
