San Rafael, CA (January 29, 2011) – The Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team had its 12 game winning streak snapped against Dominican University, 70-65, at the Conlan Center. A second half field goal percentage of 38% and a free throw percentage of 56%, coupled with an inability to get stops down the stretch sealed the Sea Warriors' fate.
Again, HPU was saddled with foul trouble, afflicting two of its stars. Jazzmin Awa-Williams picked up two early fouls and eventually fouled out, limited to just 19 minutes of play. The hero against Academy of Art, Paris Gravely, was restricted to just 24 minutes of action due to fouls.
Despite the limited playing time Awa-Williams led the team in scoring with 15 points. Mana Hopkins had 11 points, while Skye Savini had 10 to round out HPU's double digit scorers. Courtney Buster led the team with eight rebounds to go along with nine points, narrowly missing another double-double.
Tammy Brawner had a game-high 18 points for the Penguins. Dominican shot 57% in the second half, and hit 12 of 14 free throws, in doing so improves its record to 5-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
HPU falls to 13-4 and 7-1.
The Sea Warriors looked good in the first half, leading most of the way, including a 10 point lead with 5:37 left, as the teams broke for the half, HPU led by five. Late in the second half, HPU was up 59-58, but Dominican went on a 12-6 run over the final 3:43 to earn the victory.
HPU now returns home to play BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday, February 2nd at the Neil Blaisdell Center starting at 5:30pm. Following the game the 2010 NCAA National Champions HPU Softball team will be presented their championship rings.
