Box Score Hilo, HI (November 19, 2011) – The Hawai'i Pacific women's basketball team moved back over .500 with a 83-66 win over Alaska-Fairbanks at the Vulcan Women's Classic 2011. Mana Hopkins,
Paris Gravely,
Taiyande Huskey,
Skye Savini, and
Melody Ladrido all registered double-digits in points.
There were two ties and four lead changes early in the contest; however HPU claimed the lead for good with 12:52 left in the first half. HPU kept up the intensity, building a 13 point lead by the half. The second half was all Sea Warriors, leading by 24 with 5:01 left.
Savini led the way with 17 points on 6-10 shooting, she also added eight rebounds. Hopkins had her second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Huskey shot 6-7 on her way to 16 points. Gravely had 12 points, including two three-pointers. Ladrido provided a spark off the bench with 15 points and five rebounds. Hopkins and Ladrido each passed out four assists.
Nicole Fenumiai was strong in the post with eight points and seven rebounds.
HPU owned the glass by a 53-41 margin, including 18-10 in offensive rebounds. The shooting percentages were similar, but HPU attempted 16 more shots. HPU shot 6-15 (40%) from deep as Fairbanks shot just 3-18 (17%). HPU also was better from the foul stripe going 21-27 as opposed to 23-37 for Fairbanks.
HPU improves to 3-2 on the season. At the same point last season, HPU was 1-3.
HPU next plays in the Oahu Classic against Hillsdale College on Thanksgiving Day at 11 AM. The two day tournament will be held at McKinley High School.
