Box Score Anaheim, CA (November 4, 2011) – The Hawai'i Pacific women's basketball team has begun the season with a road win for the first time. It came over Saint Martin's University, 60-41, as a part of the Disney Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The first half was very close with HPU holding a 26-24 lead at the break. The Sea Warriors started the second half with a flurry; HPU went on a 15-6 run to make the difference 13. St. Martin's would get the lead down to six at the 7:10 mark, but wouldn't draw any closer. HPU closed the game on a 14-3 run.
Taiyande Huskey led HPU with 14 points; she also had four assists and six rebounds.
Skye Savini also turned in an all-around performance with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Paris Gravely was efficient, hitting four of her six shots for 10 points. Mana Hopkins showed her range going 2-3 from three-point range, finishing with nine points.
The HPU defense gave St. Martin's problems all afternoon. St. Martin's shot 28% (15-54) from the floor and 7% (1-14) from long range. HPU had 10 steals on its way to forcing 23 turnovers.
The win marks the first time, since the program's start in 2007, that a HPU women's basketball team won a non-conference game off the island of Oahu.
HPU will play again against another in region opponent tomorrow on day two of the Disney Tip-Off Classic. HPU will battle California State University- Dominguez Hills at 7:30 PM PST.
