Laie, HI (February 20, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific used dominant pitching to take both ends of the doubleheader from BYU-Hawai'i. In game one, Breanne Patton threw her third shutout of the year as HPU won 4-0. Game two saw Melissa Kirby give up no earned runs in the 7-2 win. The fourth-ranked Sea Warriors are now 6-2 on the season.
In game one of this non-conference series, HPU got a two-run homer from Malie Kim, her second of the year. The Sea Warriors picked up two more unearned runs, and that was more than enough for Patton. Patton allowed just four hits in the game; she is now 4-0 with a 0.25 ERA for the year.
Game two was close, with HPU up 3-2 going into the top of the seventh inning, but four runs for HPU put the game away. The big blow was the two-out two RBI single from Pomaikai Kalakau. Alyssa Aipa, Caira Pires, and Erin Fujita all had two hits each for the Sea Warriors. Melissa Kirby went six innings for the win, giving up two unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Ashley Valine made her season debut, pitching a scoreless inning.
HPU next plays Chaminade on Monday at noon at Howard A. Okita Field in a non-conference doubleheader.
