Kaneohe, HI (February 21, 2010) – Hawai'i Pacific's pitching staff was dominant again throwing 12-0 and 6-0 shutouts against Chaminade in a non-conference softball match-up. The offense did its job, forcing a mercy-rule shortened game one, and nearly ending game two early.
Breanne Patton only pitched three innings in game one, but it was enough for her to move to 5-0 with a 0.29 ERA on the year. Coming into today's game, Patton's teammates only provided 12 runs of support in four starts. When Patton left the game today, HPU lead 11-0. Earlier in the day, the PacWest announced that Patton was the Pitcher of the Week. It is her second such award in the three-week-old season.
Maile Kim hit a long three-run homer, her third of the season, as part of the six-run third inning. The offense was balanced with 11 Sea Warriors registering hits, seven collecting RBI. Patton led the team with two hits, raising her average to .348.
In game two, Melissa Kirby got the start and pitched six shutout innings of four-hit softball for her third win of the year. The offense continued the onslaught with 12 more hits, including three from Kim who is hitting .379 with 12 RBI and a slugging percentage of .719. Kozy Toriano and Celina Garces had two more hits each; the pair are first and second on the team in average at .424 and .381 respectively.
Ashley Valine pitched in relief in both games, throwing three scoreless innings.
Chaminade is now 3-5 on the season.
The fourth-ranked Sea Warriors are now 8-2 and next play another doubleheader against Chaminade on Sunday at Central Oahu Regional Park at noon. The doubleheader is the conference season opener.
