Waipahu, HI (February 27, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific started its quest for a fifth straight Pacific West championship, sweeping Chaminade 6-4 and 5-0 in the first two game of the conference season. The road wins, at Central Oahu Regional Park, move HPU to 10-2 on the season and 2-0 in the PacWest.
Maile Kim started off game one with a bang, as she cracked her fourth homerun of the season to give HPU a 2-0 lead. The lead was erased in the fourth as Chaminde tied the game, HPU responded with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to lead 6-2. Big RBI hits were contributed by Caira Pires and Breanne Patton.
Patton, the reigning PacWest Pitcher of the Week, did not have her best stuff, but got the win to move to 6-0 on the season. The strikeout was effective for Patton, striking out eight batters in the seven inning complete game. Chante Tesoro, Kim, Pires, and Patton all had two hits.
In game two, Melissa Kirby was dominant on the mound, allowing just two hits over seven innings of shutout softball. Pires provided more than enough offense with a grand slam in the first inning, her first home run of the year. Erin Fujita had a pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth inning to finish the scoring. Kozy Toriano had two hits to lead the Sea Warriors.
HPU plays on Tuesday as they host Grand Canyon for a doubleheader at Howard A. Okita Field starting at 1 P.M.
