Patton, HPU Victorious In 1-0 Thriller

Kaneohe, HI (2/5/11) – In an early season match-up of two of the premier softball teams in the nation, Hawaii Pacific beat Rollins College 1-0 in game one.  The third ranked Sea Warriors used a Kozy Toriano solo home run and seven shutout innings from Breanne Patton to best the 18th ranked Tars.

Patton allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter, en route to her second win in as many tries. Patton, at one time, set down 13 consecutive batters. Toriano was the game's only offence with the one out homer in the third inning.

Kirsten Frame went six innings allowing one run in the loss for Rollins.

In game two, HPU had its first non-conference home loss since 2009, 7-3. Rollins took a 3-0 lead in the first, but the Sea Warriors countered with two runs in the second to keep the game close. After trading runs in the third, Rollins put the game away with two runs in the fifth, and one in the seventh.

Celina Garces went 1-3 with a double and a RBI, while Melissa Awa and Maile Kim each had RBI hits in the loss. Melissa Kirby gets her first loss of the season, and evens her record at 1-1.

Jessica Moreland and Krista Rodden both hit home runs for Rollins.

Both teams are now 3-1 on the season.

HPU plays on Wednesday, as Cal State-San Marcos visits Howard A. Okita Field for a double header at 1 p.m.
