Women’s Tennis Survives Scare

Las Vegas, NV (March 17, 2011) – In a battle between ranked teams in the West Region, Hawai'i Pacific outlasted Cal State- Stanislaus 5-4. Celina Goetti gutted out a gritty performance to win the decisive match at second singles, winning 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. The win keeps HPU in second place in the region and improves its record to 12-4.

On a blustery day in Las Vegas, the service game was far from predictable. Goetti adapted her game and predominately served using her forehand to win the last two vital sets in singles play. HPU's depth showed owning the bottom part of the lineup winning fourth, fifth, and sixth singles. Carrie Shuler was lights out at fifth singles taking the match 6-6, 6-0.

In doubles action, HPU lost two of the three matches setting the stage for the comeback in singles play. Aleksandra Stankovic and Ielyzaveta Rybakova had little issue at third singles, cruising to an 8-1 win.

The Sea Warriors close the road trip Thursday against Fresno Pacific, starting at 12:30 PM PST.
