San Mateo, CA (March 25, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific's west coast swing began Friday at the College of San Mateo, the Sea Warriors won game one against Notre Dame de Namur 4-3 and lost game two 8-4. HPU's annual trip to the California covers 14 games in nine days including PacWest matchups and the Tournament of Champions Presented by Mizuno.
Game one saw HPU mount a come-from-behind victory, the Sea Warriors trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning. Pinch-hitter Lauren Beard singled home pinch-runner Laine Shikuma during the two run inning. Erin Fujita gave HPU the go ahead run in the seventh inning, reaching on a fielder's choice while pinch-runner Pomaikai Kalakau scored.
Breanne Patton stayed perfect in game one moving to 11-0 on the season with a microscopic 0.58 ERA. She pitched her tenth complete game, scattering six hits while allowing two runs, one of them earned. Patton also struck out six Argonauts, giving her 60 total for the season. Caira Pires led the offense with two hits.
HPU went up 2-0 early in game two, taking advantage of a NDNU error and on the strength of an RBI double by Fujita. NDNU responded in second by scoring five times, by the seventh inning, the lead had grown to 8-2. HPU did not go quietly; Pires hit her third home run of the season in the seventh but it was not enough.
Melissa Kriby allowed 11 base runners, six of whom scored, in five and two-thirds innings of work. Kristina Sewell got the win for NDNU surrendering just two earned runs. HPU had chances, stranding 10 runners on base. Kozy Toranio and Fujita each had two hits.
The 17-5 Sea Warriors next face Academy of Art on Saturday at Noon PST.
