Softball Sweeps Dominican

San Rafael, CA (March 28, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific took both halves of today's doubleheader against Dominican University in PacWest Conference play. HPU took game one in a mercy-rule shortened affair 12-0, and held on in game two 3-2. The wins push HPU to the twenty win mark, now 20-6 and 9-4 in the conference.

In a constantly reoccurring theme, Breanne Patton was virtually unhittable in getting the win for HPU. The Ewa Beach native is now 13-0 in 13 starts with 12 complete games, she has allowed six earned runs in 83 innings of work. Today, Patton gave up two hits in five innings pitched.

HPU's 10 run outburst, spanning the third and fourth innings, left little drama in the first game. The SeaWarriors ripped pitches all afternoon, Caira Pires starting the scoring with a leadoff homerun to left field in the second inning. In addition to the long ball, HPU had five doubles and a triple.

Kozy Toriano went 2-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Maile Kim doubled, scored and drove in three runs; Kim leads the team with 23 RBI for the season. Pires also had a double and scored three times. Patton supported herself with a two RBI triple.

In game two, 2010 All-Conference selection Ashley Valine got the start and win. Valine gave up two runs over seven innings while striking out three and walking zero. The runs came in the first inning for the Penguins and the game stayed 2-0 until the Sea Warrior half of the fifth. Back-to-back singles with runners in scoring position by Alyssa Aipa and Celina Garces tied the game at two. Toriano led off the seventh with a double, after an out, she stole third. Laine Shikuma sent a fly ball deep enough to left that Toriano was able to tag up for the walk-off win.

Seven different Sea Warriors recorded hits. Garces led the team with two hits and a RBI.

HPU will play against Dixie State in San Francisco on Wednesday at 11:00 A.M.
