Waipahu, HI (March 6, 2011) – The third time was the charm for Hawai'i Pacific in defeating a Division I opponent this season. After losing two DI matches by a 4-3 counts, HPU topped Gonzaga to in convincing fashion, 6-1. Zora Vlckova was nearly perfect winning first singles 6-0, 6-0; the two-time All-American has not lost a set this season and is 9-0 overall.
The Sea Warriors won the doubles point, by winning second and third doubles. Vlckova teamed with Celina Goetti to win 8-2 at second doubles, as Aleksandra Stankovic and Ielyzaveta Rybakova won 8-1 at third doubles. With the doubles point already secured by HPU, Gonzaga was victorious at first doubles.
HPU kept the momentum going into singles play, taking five of the six matches. Goetti and Florie Paquay both won in straight sets, but the match of the day belonged to Stankovic who lost the first set 0-6, but rallied to win the next two, 6-0, and 6-2.
HPU improves to 10-2 on the season, and maintains its number seven national ranking.
The Sea Warriors now head to Las Vegas for five matches in five days, starting on Sunday against third-ranked Lynn University at 12:30 P.M. MST.
