Softball Reaches 30 Wins

Kaneohe, HI (April 16, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific softball reached the 30 win mark for the 15th time in school history during Saturday's doubleheader sweep of BYU-Hawai'i. HPU used the mercy rule in game one winning 11-0 and had to go extra innings in a 2-0 game two win.

In game one HPU again rode the arm of Breanne Patton to win, although the offense also made quite a statement. Patton threw five shutout innings, striking out nine Seasiders, moving to 19-1 on the season. HPU's bats ended any suspense early with four runs in the first, three in the second and four more in the third.

Eight Sea Warriors collected hits including two from Kozy Toriano, Patton and Pomi Kalakau. Of HPU's 11 hits, seven were doubles. Toriano, Patton and Nicole Morrow each knocked in two runs.

In game two, solid pitching prevailed on both sides. Melissa Kirby for HPU and Gaby Hawkins from BYU-H both had shutouts through seven innings. In the top of the eighth inning HPU finally broke through. Toriano laid down a perfect bunt and beat it out to leadoff the inning. Toriano ended up at third base with two outs and Patton reached second after walking. Celina Garces then ripped a double over the leftfielder's head to score two and win the game for HPU.

Kirby got the win going eight innings allowing five hits and striking out three. Chante Tesoro, Toriano and Garces each had two hits for HPU.

HPU is now 30-9 and 16-4 in PacWest play, and winners of six straight. The Sea Warriors remain one game back in the conference race. HPU next takes the field on Monday at in Laie vs. BYU-H at 2 PM for a PacWest doubleheader.
