Softball Goes 1-2 on Day One of T.O.C

Turlock, CA (April 1, 2011) – On the first day of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno, Hawai'i Pacific lost the opening two games before winning the nightcap. HPU fell 5-0 to UC San Diego and to Chico State 2-1, while besting Cal State Stanislaus 5-4.

Breanne Patton pitched her second complete game of the day in the win over CSS; she got the win moving to 15-1 on the season. Patton did it all as she also got the walk-off hit to lift HPU in the eighth inning. HPU was down 3-0 by the second inning, but would rally to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth. CSS would tie the game up off Patton in the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings.

Patton pitched eight innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out seven. Caira Pires led the offense with two hits. Patton, Nicole Morrow and Celina Garces each drove in a run while Pomaikai Kalakau drove in two without the benefit of a base hit.

The second game of the day saw HPU lose a pitcher's duel, 2-1 to Chico State. The offense was sluggish only recording five hits. CSU took at 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, HPU pulled within one in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Pires singled and moved to second on a wild pitch, Patton then singled her home.

Ashley Valine was the hard-luck loser, giving up one earned run in four and two thirds innings. Melissa Kirby pitched well in relief, striking out three batters in two and a third scoreless innings.

In the first game of the day the HPU bats were stymied against UCSD, losing 5-0. The Sea Warriors only managed one hit off of Camille Gaito. Patton got her first loss the season, she did pitch well however, only giving up one earned run in the complete game. Pires's single in the second inning saved the Sea Warriors from being no hit.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when UCSD posted four runs. With two on and two out and no runs yet scored, HPU's defense failed. Instead of heading to the dugout, a fielding error at third by Pires kept the inning going.

HPU continues play in the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno tomorrow against CSU San Bernardino at 11:45 AM PST and against CSU Monterey Bay at 6:00 PM PST.
