Palolo, HI (April 22, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific hit four home runs on the day in wining 8-4 and 6-5 over Chaminade at Palolo Recreational Field. Celina Garces clubbed two home runs, one in each game. Kozy Toriano hit a game tying homer in game two, and Caira Pires went deep to tie for the team lead with six.
The teams combined for 23 hits in game one, but HPU got the big and timely hits. HPU trailed 2-1 going into the 5th inning before exploding for seven runs in the inning. Maile Kim and Pires each had RBI hits before Garces hit a two-run homer. Later in the inning, pitch-hitter Alisa Apia doubled home a run. HPU took advantage of fielding miscues by Chaminade to score the other two runs. The eight runs were enough for Breanne Patton who moves to 21-1 on the season.
Patton pitched seven innings giving up four runs on ten hits while striking out eight. Kim led the team with three hits, Garces had two and both had two RBI.
In game two, HPU needed extra-innings to earn the win. The game was tied at four in the fourth inning; before Chaminade took the lead in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Toriano hit a solo home run to left to tie the game. The game would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth, when with one out Toriano doubled home Laine Shikuma for the walk-off win.
Ashley Valine pitched five and a third innings in relief giving up five hits and one run to get the win. Toriano, Garces, Pires and Erin Fujita each had two hits to lead the offense. Toriano and Pires both knocked in two runs.
HPU plays a doubleheader tomorrow against Dixie State at noon at Howard A. Okita Field.
