Turlock, CA (April 2, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific beat Cal State San Bernardino 8-6 in the morning game, but fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 5-4 in the premier West Region softball tournament, The Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno. HPU now 2-3 in the T.O.C, wins its bracket due to a run differential tiebreaker. The Sea Warriors are 24-9 overall.

In the first game, HPU used the long ball mixed with good starting pitching to defeat CSUSB. Breanne Patton extended her record to 16-1 pitching her 16th complete game of the year, she surrendered five runs but only one of them was earned.

HPU fell behind 3-0 in the second inning, but responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second, three in the third and three in the fourth. Leading 8-3, the Sea Warriors held off a late charge from CSUSM to get the one run win.

During the third inning HPU hit back-to-back home runs, first a two-run homer by Caira Pires and then Breanne Patton helped herself with a solo shot. Pires again led the team with two hits and two RBI; Maile Kim also drove in two runs.

In game two of the day, HPU fell in a big hole early and could not fully recover. Melissa Kirby gave up five runs in three innings forcing the Sea Warriors into comeback mode. HPU scored four runs in the fifth inning to make it a one run game, highlighted by a two RBI single by Nicole Morrow and a RBI from Celina Garces.

Ashley Valine kept HPU in the game throwing four scoreless innings of two hit softball. Morrow led the team going 3-4, while Kim added two hits for the Sea Warriors.
