Baseball Sweeps, Clinches 2nd Place

Waipahu, HI (April 30, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific took both ends of today's PacWest doubleheader over Academy of Art. The Sea Warriors took game one 12-5 and game two 6-1. The win in the opener clinched second place in the conference, and assures HPU as an overall athletics department,  the Commissioner's Cup for the second straight year.

HPU took an early 3-0 lead in game one scoring three times in the second inning. Lanan Rice-Kashima tripled with the bases loaded knocking in all three. Academy of Art came back to take the lead 5-3 after five innings. HPU got a run back in the sixth, to trail by one, but broke the game open with eight runs in the seventh inning. HPU would close out AAU for the 12-5 win, in a game where both team recorded seven hits. The Sea Warriors benefited from four errors on AAU.

Rice-Kashima had three hits, a run scored and six RBI, a career high. Wade Tamaru scored twice and drove in two runs. Jordan Oshiro scored one and drove in a run. Starter Michael Greene moved to 5-4 on the season in what was likely his last appearance as Sea Warrior. Greene gave up three earned runs and struck out eight in the nine-inning complete game.

HPU again took the lead in the second inning in game two by scoring a run on a Jordan Inamasu sacrifice fly. AAU would briefly tie the game in the top of the fourth, but HPU answered in the bottom of the fourth on a Jordan Rego RBI single. With a 2-1 advantage entering the sixth inning, the Sea Warriors added four insurance runs featuring a Blake Amaral bases loaded double to score three.

Rego led HPU with two hits and Max Newman added a RBI. Started Toby Inouye went the distance giving up nine hits but just one run while striking out seven. Inouye is now 5-5 on the season.

HPU closes the season tomorrow at Hans L'Orange Field at noon with another PacWest doubleheader against Academy of Art. HPU will look to improve on its 24-21 overall record and its 18-12 conference mark. After game two HPU will celebrate its seniors.
