Kaneohe, HI (April 30, 2011) – For the fifth consecutive year, Hawai'i Pacific has won the PacWest Conference. HPU is technically co-champs with Dixie State, but will receive the conference's automatic qualifying status due to a head-to-head tie breaker. On a day where HPU had to sweep, it took game one 2-1 and game two 9-3 over UH-Hilo. The wins helped assured HPU of winning the Commissioner's Cup for the second straight year.
In game one Breanne Patton was dominant on the mound for HPU. All runs in the game were scored in the first inning. UH-Hilo led 1-0 after their first at bat, but HPU scored twice in the bottom the first and that was all they needed. Malie Kim drove in one run on an RBI single, and the other run scored on a Hilo error.
Kim led the offense going 2-3 with an RBI. Patton again pitched a complete game giving up five hits and a run while striking out four.
HPU ended any drama early in game two by scoring eight runs in the second inning. The big blow was a grand slam by Kim and a two RBI double by Melissa Awa. UH-Hilo scored three runs in the middle innings prompting a pitching change, but HPU never led by less than five in the game.
Ashley Valine got the start and gave up two runs in three and a third innings. Patton came in relief to get the win. Patton is now 23-2 with a 1.29 ERA. Patton pitched three and two-thirds innings in game two giving up one run. Awa led HPU with two hits.
The Sea Warriors end the regular season with a record of 37-10 and a 23-5 in the PacWest. HPU is currently ranked second in the West Region and would host one sub-regional if they stay second. The schedule will be announced May 9 at 4 A.M. HST.
