Honolulu, HI (May 13, 2011) – In its first postseason appearance since capturing the national championship last spring, Hawai'i Pacific lost 3-2 to Cal State San Bernardino in extra innings. The Sea Warriors remain alive in the West Regional and face Dixie State College tomorrow at 1:30 PM in an elimination game.
The seventh-seeded Coyotes took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. HPU would score single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the contest. All-PacWest selection Maile Kim knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly, and Chante Tesoro singled to center to tie the game.
Both pitchers would trade zeros until the eighth when CSUSB's Alyssa Flores singled in the go-ahead run with two outs. The Sea Warriors did not go quietly in the bottom of the eighth. Tesoro led off the inning with a single and would be retired on Kozy Toriano's fielder's choice. Kim singled to right field moving Toriano to third. Kim thought Toriano would break for home as Kim ran towards second, trying to draw a throw and get into a rundown, thus allowing the run to score. Miscommunication occurred and Kim was easily tagged out on the way to second without the run scoring. With two out, Caira Pires grounded out to end the game.
Breanne Patton got the start and loss for HPU, tossing a complete game scatting nine hits. The PacWest Pitcher of the Year gave up three runs, walking four and striking out two. Cassidy Lee got the win for CSUSB. HPU had six hits off Lee, three of them by Tesoro.
In the second game of the day, Sonoma State defeated Dixie State 3-2, also in eight innings. That sets up CSUSB and Sonoma State to play tomorrow at 11 AM at Howard A. Okita Field. HPU will play Dixie State for the fifth time this season at 1:30 PM; HPU won three out of the four games in the regular season. The winner of the HPU-DSC game will play the loser of the SSU-CSUSB at 4 P.M. in another elimination game.
