Belmont, CA (October 22, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific volleyball team (11-7, 5-5) won the first match of its five-match mainland trip, a sweep of Notre Dame de Namur (1-19, 0-11). HPU won all three sets, although the first and second were close (27-25, 26-24, 25-16).
HPU came out slow and fell behind 12-6 in the first set, but the Sea Warriors would battle back and tie the set at 22. The set would again be tied at 24 and 25. At 25 all, HPU got a kill from
Elizabeth Culpepper and then an attack error on NDNU would end the set.
The Sea Warriors trailed early, but rebounded to lead most of the second set. However, HPU couldn't close the set, the green and blue led 24-19 before a NDNU run tied the set. The recipe to win the final two points was the same as in the first set, a Culpepper kill and a hitting error on the Argos.
HPU ran away with the third set leading 20-9 at one point. HPU hit .231 in the third, a match-high.
“We had to deal with some injuries, everyone had to contribute tonight. We were able to start playing to our ability in the third game and we hope this will kick start us as we move forward on this road trip,” said HPU head coach
Daryl Kapis.
HPU has won four straight matches and is back to .500 in PacWest play. The four game streak matches the season-high winning streak from September 7th to September 15th.
Amanda Moriarty led HPU with 10 kills and added 12 digs as
Haley Doerfler had nine kills and hit .444.
Pihanakealoha Kea passed out 27 assists and
Chelsey Buyuan had 15 digs to lead the Sea Warriors in those categories.
HPU will next head to Oakland to play PacWest newcomer Holy Names on Wednesday at 7 PM PST.
