Women’s Basketball Breaks into Win Column

Monmouth, OR (November 10, 2012)- After struggling to find her range in game one, Susannah Walmsley  answered with a brilliant performance in game two of the Phoenix Inn DII Shootout as the Hawai'i Pacific (1-1) women's basketball team defeated St. Martin's (0-2) by the score of 69-67.

Walmsley finished the game with 24 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Ieva Nagy added 21 points in the winning effort for the Sea Warriors.

The game was a battle throughout and despite shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, the Sea Warriors trailed by one at the break, 34-33.

In the second half, the Sea Warriors found themselves down by 11 points with 7:42 to go until Veanne Navarro hit a layup to cut the Saints lead to nine. Walmsley would put the comeback bid into full motion on the next possession, hitting a three ball that cut the lead to six with seven minutes to go. The backbreaker came with 32 seconds on the clock when Heidi Anton hit a clutch three pointer to give the Sea Warriors their first lead since the score was 4-2, less than two minutes in to the game. HPU would continue its lock down defense holding the Saints without a field goal for the final three and a half minutes of the game, including the final two possessions.

The win concludes the Phoenix Inn DII Shootout for the Sea Warriors who earned a split (1-1). HPU will remain in Monmouth however, to take on Western Oregon in a rematch of Friday night's contest.  The Sea Warriors chance at redemption against the Wolves is scheduled for November 11th at 2 PM.
