Women’s Basketball Powers Past BYU-Hawaii

Laie, HI (December 1, 2012)- Ieva Nagy scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Susannah Walmsley scored a career high 34 points as the Hawai'i Pacific (5-2, 1-1) women's basketball team started PacWest play with a big victory over BYU-Hawai'i (1-3, 0-1) by the score of 97-68.
 
The Sea Warriors got out in front early, shooting 48.9% from the field by hitting 22 of 45 shots in the opening half. HPU took 21 shots from behind the arc in the first half hitting nine of them, good for 42.9%. The hot shooting Sea Warriors went to the break leading the Seasiders 54-32.
 
After holding BYU-H to 27.6% shooting in the first half, the Sea Warriors continued to lock down the Seasiders only allowing them to shoot 12-35 (34.3%) in the second half. With HPU up by 30 points for much of the second half, head coach Reid Takatsuka was able to go to his bench with 13 players seeing action in the game.
 
“This was a nice way to start the conference season. The girls did a fantastic job of sharing the basketball and playing well together,” said Takatsuka.
 
The game marked the return of Melody Ladrido who finished with 17 points on 7-12 shooting while dishing out three assists. Walmsley had a monster night hitting six three-pointer, grabbing six rebounds and passing out a team-high six assists.
 
The SeaWarriors finished the game shooting a season high 48.7% from the field while holding BYU-H to just 31.3% shooting.
 
The Sea Warriors take an extended break from regular season action, not playing again until January 5th when they take on Academy of Art at the Neil S Blaisdell Center; game time is 7 PM. However, HPU will visit UH-Manoa on December 18th for an exhibition game at 7 PM.
