Softball Opens PacWest Play with Sweep

Kaneohe, HI (April 18, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific softball team won both halves of the doubleheader over BYU-Hawaii in the first two Pacific West Conference games of the year. HPU won the first game 6-1 and held on in the second matchup 5-3.

The Sea Warriors took an early lead in game one when they pushed across a run in the second inning. After a Erin Fujita triple, Nicole Morrow doubled her home. The Seasiders briefly tied the game in the top of the fourth, but HPU responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Celina Garces singled in a run and then Chante Tesoro doubled home two more. In the sixth, Tesoro hit a two-run homer to make the final score 6-1.

Tesoro drove in four runs on her two extra base hits. Keila Eldert, Morrow and Fujita also each had two hits. Breanne Patton moved to 3-0 on the season with the win. The Ewa Beach product allowed just two hits while walking only one and striking out eight.

HPU appeared to be in firm control in the second game, but ended up sweating late. HPU got single runs on RBI from Morrow and Fujita in the second and fourth innings. In the sixth, the Sea Warriors added three more highlighted by a Garces RBI. Down 5-0 and with only three outs remaining, the Seasiders struck for three runs and brought the tying run to the plate before Melissa Kirby worked out of the jam.

Kirby also is now 3-0; she yielded three earned runs in seven innings of work. Patton and Fujita each recorded multiple hit games.

The softball team next travels to California for a three game swing. The first doubleheader is against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA, first pitch is set for noon PST.
