Honolulu, HI (March, 10, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific softball team (10-4, 5-1)used strong pitching and took advantage of Notre Dame de Namur's (12-10, 2-5) miscues in a PacWest doubleheader sweep at Sand Island Park. HPU used the mercy rule in game one's 8-0 win and won 5-1 in game two.
Breanne Patton was dominant in the opener; she pitched six shutout innings yielding only three hits while earning her sixth win of the season.
Keila Elderts had a walk-off two RBI single with one out in the sixth inning to give HPU the necessary eight-run lead.
HPU started the scoring in the second inning with two runs, highlighted by a RBI hit from
Celina Garces. The Sea Warriors struck for four more runs in the third inning. First, Elderts scored on a suicide squeeze where Patton dropped a great bunt. Next, back-to-back doubles from
Brittany Fenumiai and
Nicole Morrow plated a pair of runs. Finally,
Melissa Awa drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
In game two, HPU took an early first inning lead with a pair of runs. Patton and Morrow each had RBI. NDNU got its lone run of the day in the bottom of the second to pull to within a run. However, HPU would put the game away with three runs in the fifth inning. After singles from
Chante Tesoro and Elderts, Malie Kim drove a run in. Then, with two outs, Morrow doubled home another run. Garces capped the scoring with a RBI single.
Melissa Kirby pitched well in game two earning the win. She gave up one run in seven innings while striking out two without a walk.
Elderts, Morrow, and Garces all had three hits in the doubleheader. Tesoro scored three times, Fenumiai scored twice. Morrow led the team with three RBI, Garces, Elderts, and Patton had two.
HPU will host Waseda University (Japan) in an exhibition doubleheader tomorrow at noon. The next regular season doubleheader is on Tuesday against the University of LaVerne at 1 PM at Howard A. Okita Field.
