Kaneohe, HI (March 14, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific softball team (13-5, 7-1) won two games in two very different ways against BYU-Hawaii (7-9, 4-8) in a PacWest doubleheader. HPU won in blowout fashion in game one, 6-0. In game two, HPU used its last at bat to get the 5-4 victory.
Caira Pires jump started the offense with a triple to lead off the second inning in game one; she would score on a sacrifice fly from
Breanne Patton.
Erin Fujita would reach on a Seasider error and
Melissa Awa would make them pay with a RBI double. Already leading 2-0, HPU would go back to work in the fifth inning. With one out and runners on the corners,
Nicole Morrow singled up the middle to start the HPU scoring. Pires would then crush a three-run homer to put HPU up 6-0.
HPU would strike first in game two scoring single runs in the second and third innings. BYU-H would answer with three runs in the bottom of the third on a home by Alexis Parry. The Sea Warriors came back to tie the game without a hit in the fourth. HPU retook the lead when Fujita walked with the bases loaded. The 'Siders would come right back with a run in the fifth to even the game at four. In the seventh, Pires tripled again and was driven in on Patton's sacrifice fly.
Breanne Patton was outstanding all day. She was dominant in game one, pitching seven shutout innings while striking out five. In game two, Patton got the win in relief throwing two and a third innings and only allowing two hits. Offensively, she went 2-5 with three RBI in the doubleheader, including the game two winning sacrifice fly.
Pires went 5-6 with three runs, four RBI, two triples and a home run in the doubleheader. Tesoro, Malie Kim, and Morrow each had two hits.
