Kailua, HI (March 19, 2012) –
Breanne Patton picked up a win and a save in a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art (9-20, 5-9) on Monday in Kailua. Patton's three hit shutout led Hawai'i Pacific (17-5, 11-1) to a 6-0 victory in game one, and a perfect inning and a third gave her a save in the second game, a 13-10 win for HPU.
HPU gave Patton a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when Kaila Elderts essentially scored a run all by herself. The speedster beat out an infield hit, stole second and third base, and then scored on an AAU throwing error. The Sea Warriors would add another run in the fourth inning on a
Melissa Awa RBI hit. HPU put the game out of reach in the sixth with a four spot. Patton laid down a perfect sacrifice to score
Toni Baysa to start the scoring.
Chante Tesoro ended the scoring with a three RBI double to left center field.
Elderts led HPU with two hits. Patton moves to 11-1 on the season with the win.
Game two was sloppy for both teams. The teams combined for 14 errors (seven a side). Although not crisp, game two ended up being competitive.
It looked like HPU was going to roll in game two after scoring nine runs in the top of the first inning. The first nine Sea Warriors reached base and all scored.
Caira Pires, Elderts, Tesoro and Patton all had RBI.
Nicole Morrow and
Celina Garces each had two RBI hits. Art U would get a run in the second, but HPU would answer with four more runs in the third. Morrow doubled with the bases loaded to score three runs. Morrow would later score on an error.
Leading 13-1, HPU emptied the bench. Art U didn't quit and scored three in the third, one in the fourth, and five in the fifth to make it a game at 13-10. Patton would slam the door in the fifth and pitch a scoreless sixth inning. By that time, however, the sun had set and the game was called due to darkness.
Melissa Kirby gave up 10 runs and got the win, but only three of the runs were earned. She moves to 6-3 on the season. Morrow and Patton each had two hits while Morrow drove in five. Morrow now has 22 RBI in 22 games, tied for second best in the conference.
HPU will next travel to Utah to play Dixie State College in a doubleheader on March 23rd.
