Kaneohe, HI (April 10, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific softball team (25-17, 17-9) took both halves of today's road doubleheader at Howard A. Okita Field against BYU-Hawaii (11-16, 6-15). With heavy rains in Laie, the contests were moved to Kaneohe, and while not entirely dry there either, the games were completed. HPU shutout the 'Siders in game one 4-0 and held on 3-2 in game two.
Breanne Patton just missed a no-hitter, allowing only one hit. The game's only hit for BYU-H was a slow grounder into the hole, shortstop
Celina Garces made a good play, but her throw was just late.
The HPU offense did its job, collecting 10 hits and four runs.
Dorian Acierto put HPU in front in the second inning with an RBI single. HPU added another run in the third on a single down the right field line by
Nicole Morrow. Patton scored on a passed ball to put HPU up 3-0 in the sixth. HPU then closed the scoring in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by
Maile Kim.
Patton moved to 16-7 on the season with the shutout win, she struck out eight batters and walked only one. Morrow was 4-4 at the plate as Patton was 2-2. Acierto and
Chante Tesoro also had two hits, while Tesoro scored a pair of runs.
In game two, HPU did all its scoring in the fourth inning.
Caira Pires drove in Acierto for the first run, Pires was then pinch run for by
Sierra Mendiola who eventually stole home on a double steal. The third run came in on a sacrifice fly by Tesoro. BYU-H scored a pair of runs on a homer in the sixth against starter
Melissa Kirby. She was then lifted for Patton who retired the last four batters of the game.
Tesoro and Pires each had two hits to pace the offense. Kirby got the win after giving up two runs in five and two-thirds innings. Patton picked up her second save of the season.
HPU will host Chaminade University on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
