Kaneohe, HI (April 14, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific softball team (27-17, 19-9) posted two impressive victories today in a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade University (14-25, 8-18). HPU's strong starting pitching was the story of the day in 7-1 and 6-1 wins.
Breanne Patton got the ball in game one and responded with her 17th win of the season. The senior pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on seven hits. She struck out three batters without walking any.
The HPU bats gave Patton a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Keila Elderts singled with one out and advanced to second on a groundout from
Maile Kim.
Nicole Morrow then singled through the left side of the infield to score the speedy Elderts. Patton was up next and narrowly missed and home run, the ball hit the top of the fence on the fly, she settled for an RBI double.
The Sea Warriors ended all doubt in the third when they struck for five more runs.
Chante Tesoro singled and Elderts reached on an error to set the table. Kim then drove in HPU's third run on a single up the middle. Morrow also went up the middle to drive in another Sea Warrior run. Patton then singled to reload the bases, and Kim scampered home on a wild pitch.
Caira Pires also got into the act with a single to score Morrow. Patton scored the final run of the inning on a single by
Celina Garces.
Chaminade got a run in the sixth, but that would be all that Patton would surrender.
Melissa Kirby was equally impressive in her 10th win of the season in game two. The Virginia native scatted six hits over seven innings while allowing just one run.
The Sea Warrior offense scored early and often in game two, starting in the first inning. Tesoro started the game with a standup triple and then came home on a single by Elderts. HPU would add three more runs in the third inning on RBI hits from Kim and
Dorian Acierto. Acierto also just missed a round tripper, as her double also hit the upper part of the fence in left. Pomi Kalakau added a RBI in the frame on a groundout.
Chaminade scored a run in the third to make it a 4-1 game, but HPU would respond with a pair of runs in the fourth. HPU would benefit from two Silversword errors and get a sacrifice fly from Morrow to close the day's scoring.
The Sea Warrior offense had 21 hits on the doubleheader, including four each from Elderts and Morrow.
HPU and Chaminde will play another doubleheader tomorrow at Central Oahu Regional Park at noon.
