Women’s Tennis Wraps Regular Season with Win

Turlock, CA (April 17, 2012) – The fifth ranked Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis team (14-4) will head into the PacWest Championship with some momentum after an 8-1 non-conference road win over Cal State Stanislaus (8-4).

The only blemish on the Sea Warriors' day was a 5-8 lost at first doubles. Ielyzaveta Rybakova/Celina Goetti cruised to an 8-2 victory at second doubles, while Lea Kruse-Utermann/Zora Vlckova posted a similar result (8-3) at third doubles. The Sea Warriors have been dominant at second and third doubles this season, combined the teams are 26-3.

Vlckova may have played her best singles match of the season, a 6-2, 6-2 win over a top 20 opponent. Fellow countryman, Magdalena Smejova won by an identical score at third singles. The Czech women are 27-7 combined in singles action.

Rybakova and Carrie Shuler were both lights out at the bottom of the lineup, Rybakova won 6-0, 6-1 and Shuler 6-2, 6-0 at fifth and sixth singles.

Vivian Hansen battled in a hard fought 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win at fourth singles. Goetti played the closest match, however, she took the first set of her match 7-5, and then inexplicably lost the second set 0-6. Goetti reverted to her first set form and won the tiebreaker 10-6.

HPU will next play in the quarterfinals of the PacWest Championship on Thursday against Dixie State College. The match is scheduled for 12:30 PM at host Dominican University.
