Kaneohe, HI (April 29, 2012) – Hawai'i Pacific celebrated the careers of
Maile Kim and
Breanne Patton, both big contributors to HPU's run of success over the last four years, today at Howard A. Okita Field. The Sea Warriors ended the season with a non-conference sweep Chaminade (15-32), taking game one 6-0 and then 10-2 in an abbreviated five inning game.
The Sea Warriors put up single runs in the first and second innings to lead 2-0 early. Kim picked up the RBI single in the first and
Celina Garces executed a suicide squeeze with Patton scoring in the second.
HPU put the game out of reach in the fourth with four more runs.
Caira Pires (pictured) doubled home pinch-runner
Toni Baysa, who had stolen second base, to make it a 3-0 game. Pires moved to third on a single by
Erin Fujita and then scored on a RBI groundout by
Chante Tesoro. Later in the inning, HPU would score a run on an error, and get another RBI from HPU's all-time RBI leader, Kim.
Patton earned her 20th victory of the season for the second year in a row. She was dominant, scattering seven hits in seven innings while striking out six without a walk. In fact, her last pitch was a strike out.
HPU scored early and often in game two, stopping the game in the fifth via the mercy rule. HPU scored three in the first with a big help from the senior class, Kim would have an RBI single and Patton a two RBI double. Chaminade came back in the second and score a pair of runs to make it a one run game. HPU would make it 4-2 in the bottom of the second when
Keila Elderts ripped an RBI double. Pires then hit a two-run homer in the third to give the Sea Warriors a cushion.
HPU would land the knockout blow in the forth with four more runs.
Chanelle Senas tripled to lead off the inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Tesoro. Elderts again doubled and was driven in on a single by Kim. Next,
Dorian Acierto doubled to put runners on second and third. Patton then singled to score both runners.
Melissa Kirby picked up her 12th win of the season after giving up two unearned runs in five innings of work.
Kim led the offense with five hits and four RBI in her last doubleheader. Patton also had four RBI on three hits.
Kim leaves HPU in the lead or tied for the lead in five categories. She has played in the most games in a career and in a season, she leads the RBI category for a career and a season, and is the career home run leader. Patton is tied with Kim and one other player for most games played in a season when they played in all 58 games on HPU's National Championship team in 2010.
HPU closes the season with a record of 32-18. It is the sixth consecutive season HPU has had at least 30 wins.
