Honolulu, HI (September 25, 2012) - The Hawai'i Pacific volleyball team (7-4, 1-2) was defeated by the 13th ranked 'Lopes of Grand Canyon University (13-2, 3-2) in four sets on Tuesday night at St. Andrews Priory (26-28, 25-21, 23-25, 15-25).
The young Sea Warriors came out and played tough from the opening serve in set one, losing to the 'Lopes in “bonus volleyball” with a score of 28 to 26. Set two was won by the Sea Warriors with solid defense from
Pihanakealoha Kea as well as help on the net by
Kasey Thompson,
Haley Doerfler, and
Samantha Rummans.
Perhaps the most exciting moment of the night for the Sea Warriors was in set three when they rallied from being behind 16-9 to eventually overtake Grand Canyon 21-20, before eventually falling to GCU with a final score of 23-25. In the final set, an early deficit by the Sea Warriors proved to be too much and resulted in a 25-15 loss which sealed the match for GCU.
Rummans led the way for HPU, pounding out 15 kills. Double-digits were also reached by Thompson with 10. Kea notched another double-double with 37 assists and 17 digs.
The Sea Warriors look to get back to their winning ways this Saturday at 5pm when the #12 BYU-Hawaii Seasiders make their way to St. Andrews Priory.
