Men’s Basketball Edged by Chaminade

Honolulu, HI (January 14, 2013 0 - Malte Ziegenhagen had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists, but it wasn't enough as the Hawai'i Pacific (5-7, 2-3) men's basketball team fell to cross-town rival Chaminade (7-7, 2-3) by the score of 72-69. Jelany White and Leif Rodney each scored in double-figures for the Sea Warriors.

The Sea Warriors jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after a Ziegenhagen jump shot. The HPU lead would get as big as eight after a Kawika Lyons three-pointer with 10:46 to play in the first half. Chaminade would answer with a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to take a nine point lead. The 'Swords first half lead would get as big as 11 but, the Sea Warriors would cut it down to seven before the half when Kevin Atilla would find Ziegenhagen for an open three-pointer. The teams would go to the break with Chaminade enjoying a 32-25 lead.

Chaminade would come out of the break hot again, going on an 8-2 run in the first two and half minutes of the second half, making the score 40-29. HPU would answer by going inside to its big men.

Marko Cukic would hit a layup followed by three straight buckets from center Farbod Farman. Ziegenhagen would then hit back-to-back three-pointers and the Sea Warriors had seized momentum as well as the lead with 12:41 to play in the second half. HPU would stretch its lead out to seven points with five minutes to play when Jeffery Neal found Ziegenhagen for his third three-pointer of the half.

Down the stretch it would be a couple of costly turnovers combined with efficient foul shooting by the 'Swords that would doom the Sea Warriors bid for victory. Chaminade hit four free throws in the closing seconds negating a White three-pointer to close the game.

HPU led in nearly every statistical category, but were undone by 19 turnovers versus Chaminade's six. HPU, the nation's second most accurate three-point shooting team continued it's torrid outside shooting, hitting 9 of 17 (52.9%) shots from distance. Defensively HPU held Chaminade to 40% (24-60) shooting from the field, including a paltry 27.6% (8-29) from behind the arc. The Sea Warriors also out-rebounded the 'Swords 40-28, but trailed statistically at the free throw line hitting only 8 of 15 (53.3%) free throws while Chaminade hit 16 of 21 (76.2%) from the charity stripe.
