Strong Second Half Helps Women's Soccer to Victory

Box Score KANEOHE, HI (October 17, 2013)—The Hawai`i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (5-7, 3-4) won its third game in four tries by dropping Dominican University of California (6-6-2, 3-4-1) 2-0 on Thursday.

The first half proved to be a defensive affair as both teams struggled to put shots on net.

The Penguins would have the first scoring chance of the match in the 17th minute on a header off a corner kick, but Sea Warrior goalkeeper Anu Kahele-Manners was able to make the save.

HPU forward Vanna Hatchie created a chance of her own in the 26th minute, but was denied.

With the two sides only combining for three shots on goal, the game went to the break in a scoreless tie.

In the second half, the Sea Warriors capitalized on a Penguin mistake just 1:15 into the second frame.  Dominican was forced to play a player short after being shown a red card for violent conduct.

HPU senior Andrea Aguirre put the Sea Warriors on the board in the 67th minute, sending a free kick over the wall and over the Penguin goalkeeper's head.

The Colombia Blue and Kelly Green added an insurance goal in the 89th minute, when the 5-8 Breanna Gaddis scored her first goal of the year by using her size on a header off a corner kick. Ashlyn Ubongen picked up the assist for her team-high fifth point of the year.

The Sea Warriors finished the match with a 13-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Kahele-Manners, the reigning Pacific West Conference Freshman on the Week, made three saves for her third shutout of the year.

The Sea Warriors return to action on October 28th when they host inter-island rival University of Hawai`i Hilo. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Atherton Field.
