Volleyball Back to Winning Ways

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 31, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (14-8, 8-6) snapped its losing streak in style with a 3-0 win over Holy Names University (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) on Halloween night in downtown Honolulu.

Although the Hawks (1-22, 1-13) have had down season, they certainly didn't play like it. HPU was pushed in the match, but the made the critical plays.

"The hardest win to get is the win to end a losing streak. Last year, we were in the same situation and we were able to string some wins together after breaking the streak. We are looking do to the same this year," said Head Coach Daryl Kapis.

The Sea Warriors started off hot in set one as the home team took a 7-2 lead. HNU would battle back and tie the set at 13, and then later 17. A 3-0 mini-run featuring a kill from Haley Doerfler and an ace by Marie Fujii put HPU in control. The Hawks would trim the lead to one at 22-21, but the next three points, and the set, belonged to the Sea Warriors.

The Hawks dominated the start of the second set, grabbing a 9-2 lead. HPU clawed its way back into the set, tying the set at 14 and 18, but couldn't take a lead. Finally, it was a kill by Samantha Rummans that put HPU in front, but that wasn't the end of the set. HNU retied the set at 19, 20, 22, and 23. Kasey Thompson came up huge with a kill and an ace to steal the second set.

The third set saw HPU jump out to a 7-4 lead, however it was short lived as HNU knotted the set at seven. The match remained tight until the Sea Warriors switched on the afterburners. Leading 18-16, HPU reeled of seven of the next nine points for the impressive third set win and sweep.

Doerfler had a monster night with 10 kills on just 15 swings (.667). Rummans led the team in kills with 12 while Thompson had 10 kills and hit .389 on the match.

Hannah Schuett dished out a game-high 21 assists.

HPU is back on the floor tomorrow at 7:00 pm at St. Andrew's Priory to host Notre Dame de Namur.
