Volleyball Responds with Five Set Win

Box Score BELMONT, CA (October 6, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (12-4, 6-2) needed a win to close out its Bay Area road trip after setbacks in the previous two matches. The Sea Warriors answered the call with a 3-2 victory over Notre Dame de Namur (23-25, 25-12, 25-23, 14-25, 15-7).

It was a hard match to figure, at times both sides would battle point for point while at other times the match was a route- for both clubs.

"It was good to get the win on the last game of a long road trip. Everyone contributed in these four road games and we are happy to be heading home and playing in front of our fans," said HPU Head Coach Daryl Kapis.

The first set was a nail biter. HPU would start off hot and lead 8-2, but by the middle of the set NDNU (4-11, 2-5) would find its groove. As part of an 8-0 run, NDNU took a 15-13 lead midway through the set. HPU did not recover, although back-to-back kills from Amanda Moriarty and Pomai Recca added some intrigue at 24-23, but NDNU would finish.

Perhaps frustrated by the last two plus matches, HPU took out some stress in the second set. HPU beat up NDNU early at 10-4, and didn't let off the accelerator. The Columbia Blue and Kelly Green held a 20-12 lead and then rattled off the next five points for a statement win.

The third set seemed to be a replay of the second as HPU jumped out to an 11-6 lead. HPU continued to hold a five-point lead late in the set (23-18) before NDNU came to life. A 5-1 run trimmed HPU's advantage to one at 24-23, but Moriarty's kill gave HPU a 2-1 set lead.

As dominant as HPU was in the second set, the reverse was true in the fourth. NDNU was nearly perfect in a 25-14 romp.

With the chips down, the good HPU team emerged and controlled the fifth set from the opening whistle. With the score tied a one, HPU scored nine consecutive times capped by back-to-back-to-back service aces from Moriarty. HPU stayed in control and ended the night on a Christina Furrer kill.

Recca posted a team-high 16 kills while hitting .300. Moriarty had 13 with a slightly better .303 hitting percentage. Both girls notched double-doubles as Recca had 14 digs and Moriarty had 11. It was Moriarty's serving that was truly noteworthy however, dealing seven aces.

Chelsey Buyuan led HPU with 18 digs.

Marie Fujii passed out 26 assists while Hannah Schuett had 25.

HPU returns home to host Chaminade on October 12th at 6:00 p.m.
