Box Score LAIE, HI (November 21, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (17-11, 11-9) wrapped up the 2013 campaign with a 3-1 loss (20-25, 25-20, 24-14, 25-16) at #4 BYU-Hawaii (24-1, 19-1).
HPU was the only team to beat the PacWest Champion Seasiders this season when the Sea Warriors won at home in late September. Since then, BYU-H only lost four sets in the next 16 matches. With postseason clinched for BYU-H, HPU adopted the role of spoiler on senior night for the cross-island rival.
Spoil they did in the first set. HPU made an entrance, taking the first six points of the match to make a statement.
Kasey Thompson then got hot and scored three consecutive points, on kills, propelling HPU to a 12-3 lead. Later in the set, the home team took six consecutive points to make it interesting at 16-12. The Sea Warriors then landed the counter punch, a 4-1 mini-run to reestablish control at 20-13. The spurt was fueled by two more kills by Thompson. Still, BYU-H wasn't done and cut the lead to 22-19.
Elizabeth Culpepper then posted two kills in as many tries to bring HPU to the brink,
Samantha Rummans then put HPU ahead in the match with a kill of her own.
The second set started off in the opposite way as the first. The fourth-ranked Seasiders showed why they are so highly ranked by talking a 6-1 lead out of the gate. Another kill by Thompson cut the lead to 8-5, but just as quickly the lead was extended to 12-6. The Sea Warriors reduced the deficit to four twice more at 19-15 and 23-19, but couldn't complete the comeback.
The momentum kept rolling for BYU-H in the third set and fourth sets. The home team opened up a 9-4 lead to start the third set and wouldn't be challenged from there, winning the 25-14. The fourth set was a similar tale; the home team jumped out to a 14-7 lead and outlasted HPU.
Thompson had a great match to cap her sophomore season; she posted 11 kills while hitting .304. The same could be said for Culpepper who hit .321 while notching 10 kills. Rummans and
Haley Doerfler each posted seven kills.
Marie Fujii led HPU with 23 assists as
Amanda Moriarty led in digs will 11.
The future looks bright for HPU as 13 of the 16 players are eligible to return next season, including all the starters.
