Women’s Basketball Tripped up in Oahu Classic

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (November 29, 2013)—The Hawai`i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (1-1) dropped its first game of the season on Friday night losing to Lubbock Christian (6-1) by the score of 92-80.
 
Things looked good early for HPU after center Morganne Comstock hit a jumper from the elbow to give HPU a 5-4 lead. LCU answered, eventually stretching its advantage to 13 points with less than six minutes remaining. The Sea Warriors were able to cut the deficit to nine points however, when Veanne Navarro hit a jumper right before the half.
 
The Sea Warriors kept pace shooting 43.2% (16-37) from the field versus LCU's 45.5% (15-33) and held the advantage in three-point shooting 38.5% (5-13) versus 26.7% (4-15). HPU struggled to get to the line, as the Lady Chaparrals took 12 more free throws in the half.
 
The Sea Warriors knew they were going to need to score a lot of points in the second half as the Lady Chaparrals average over 90 points per game.
 
HPU made several small runs in the second half, but every big shot seemed to be answered on the other end as the Sea Warriors struggled to cut the lead to less than eight points.
 
LCU added a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining in the game to make the final deficit 12 points, 92-80.
 
HPU finished the game shooting 43.1% from the field on 31 for 72 shooting while the Lady Chaparrals shot 52.5% from the floor on 32 for 61 shooting.
 
Senior Skye Savini led the way for HPU with 18 points and five rebounds. Navarro (14) and Laken McClelland (13) were the Sea Warrior's other two players scoring in double-digits.
 
Head Coach Reid Takatsuka discussed his team's opening weekend, "I think overall we did pretty well the past two days. There are a lot of new parts on this team and we have a lot of work still to do to put it all together."
 
The Sea Warriors return to action December 4th against UH Hilo at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
