Women's Basketball Stumbles on Mainland

Box Score ELLENSBURG, WA (December 16, 2013)—The Hawai`i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (4-2) dropped game one of a two game series against Central Washington (5-4) on Monday night by the score of 72-68.
 
HPU jumped out to an early seven-point lead just six and a half minutes in on a Morganne Comstock jumper. Central Washington worked its way back to take a one-point lead with 1:23 to play in the half on a three-pointer.  The Cats hit another three at the buzzer to give themselvesa two-point advantage at the break.
 
The Sea Warriors shot the ball well from the floor in the first half hitting 11 of 25 shots (44%), but struggled from behind the arc, only hitting one of five (20%) three-pointers. The Wildcats however, struggled from the floor, only knocking down seven of 30 shots (23.3%), but kept it close by hitting four three-pointers and going 12-15 (80%) from the line.
 
The second half was a back and forth affair with eight lead changes and seven ties.
 
Laken McClelland hit a pair of free throws with a minute left in the game to give HPU a one-point lead, but the Wildcats answered with a layup on the other end to take the lead back. Comstock gave the Sea Warriors a one-point advantage with 32 seconds remaining with her 19th and 20th points of the game, but CWU would score the final five points to close the game, earning the 72-68 victory.
 
Comstock had a monster night in the loss for the Sea Warriors. Playing in front of her friends and family the Seattle native finished with 20 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots.
 
Skye Savini finished with 16 points and five assists while McClelland added 15 points and four helpers.
 
The Sea Warriors uncharacteristically shot 18.2% (2-11) from behind the arc, while CWU hit eight three-pointers in the game.
 
After playing game one of the series following a long red-eye flight, the Sea Warriors turn around to face the Wildcats again tomorrow in game two. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PST.
