Softball Deals Chaminade a Pair of Shutouts

KANEOHE, HI (February 10, 2013)- After not allowing a run a day before, the Hawai'i Pacific softball team (4-0) again posted a pair of shutouts, 5-0 and 7-0, against Chaminade (0-2). Senior Melissa Kirby picked up the victory in game one while freshman Kristen Caskey picked up her second shutout victory in as many days.

Kirby and the Sea Warrior defense were impressive in game one. She scattered four hits over seven innings, while only walking one. All 21 outs recorded by HPU came from balls batted in play, the defense did not commit an error all game.

Offensively, Dorian Acierto led the way scoring a pair of runs off two hits and an RBI. Lauren Beard added three hits and an RBI while Chante Tesoro picked up two hits and two runs from the leadoff spot.

After a solid performance on Saturday, Caskey would get the call in the second game on Sunday and she would not disappoint. The freshman would only allow five base runners and finish the game setting down 12 of the last 13 Silverswords she faced. Caskey spread three hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out six.

Caskey would help her own cause at the plate in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Acierto singled up the middle moving Caira Pires to second after she reached base on a fielder's choice. Alysia Maddison followed with a walk to load the bases for Caskey who doubled and cleared the bases. HPU would add four more runs in the second inning, but it wouldn't matter as Chaminade would only get one runner past second base the rest of the way.

Tesoro continued her hot start getting two more hits while Nicole Morrow went 3-3 including a home run and a double. Speedster Keila Elderts also picked up two hits and two RBI.

Head Coach Bryan Nakasone commented on his team's 4-0 start, “I'm happy that our team's ERA stands at zero after four games. Chaminade is a much improved team, but we're going to have to keep improving. Simon Frasier will be a good a good test for us.”

The Sea Warriors return to action on Saturday, February 16th at Howard A. Okita Field against Simon Frasier; first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
