Women's Basketball Dropped at Home

Honolulu, HI (February, 11, 2013) - For the second consecutive game a slow start proved to be the demise as the Hawai'i Pacific (13-6, 9-4) Women's Basketball team fell to visiting California Baptist (16-6, 10-3) by the score of 87-71. The loss drops HPU to fourth place in the PacWest standings.

HPU jumped out to an early 9-8 lead after a Skye Savini three-pointer. The Sea Warriors would not make another field goal over the next 8:47 however, as the Lancers jumped out to a 21 point advantage. Two Veanne Nevarro free throws would cut the Lancer lead to down to 17, 44-27 at the break.

The HPU shooters were cold in the first half only hitting 30% (9-30) of their attempts from the field. Perhaps even more uncharacteristic, the Sea Warriors only hit 58.3% of their free throws in the half. Despite the big deficit, HPU would rebound with a strong run in the second half.

The Sea Warriors would go on a big 10-2 run to start the second half ignited by back-to-back three pointers from Nevarro and Melody Ladrido. Another jumper from Ladrido with 14:42 remaining had the Sea Warriors within five points of the Lancers. The Lancers would answer with a 9-2 run of their own and the Sea Warriors would never threaten again.

Skye Savini led the scoring for HPU with 21 points on 8-19 shooting. Heidi Anton added 13, Nevarro registered 11 and Susannah Walmsley chipped 10 as the other Sea Warriors in double-figures. Ladrido was held to nine points after scoring 15 or more in seven straight contests.

The HPU women take on Azusa Pacific on Saturday February 16th at Moanalua High School in what will be the final home game for a trio of Sea Warriors. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
