Sumner’s Walk-Off RBI Lifts Baseball

WAIPAHU, HI (February 16, 2013) – With the bases loaded and one out, and the game tied in the bottom of the 12th inning, senior Kale Sumner had a chance to get revenge and give his team a victory. Sumner succeeded with a sacrifice fly to deep center field that gave the Hawai'i Pacific baseball (6-3) team a 4-3 victory over Northwest Nazarene (5-3).

Sumner couldn't help but feel disrespected as NNU picked him as the guy to go after. It obviously backfired.  Jordan Oshiro opened the home half of the 12th with a walk, he moved to second on a sac bunt by Derek Nakasato and then to third on a passed ball. NNU's Jon Matos would then intentionally walk Chad Bolibol and also intentionally walk Marvin Campbell to load the bases for Sumner.

In the 11th inning, NNU scored twice to take a 3-1 lead and chase starter Cory Yuh from the game. HPU would load the bases with two out in the bottom of the inning. It was freshman Tyler Tokunaga who chopped the ball past the first baseman and into right field to score two runs and retie the game.

The game was an old fashioned pitcher's duel until late. Yuh was masterful, blanking the Crusaders for the first eight frames. HPU just managed one run over the same span on a Keanu Kapana RBI double in the second inning. It appeared to be enough until NNU scored in the top of the ninth to force HPU into its fourth extra inning game of the young season.

Yuh pitched 10 and two-third innings giving up three runs on 11 hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He has been HPU's best pitcher thus far this season; he has given up four runs in 17 and two-third innings. Bryson Gauthe pitched a scoreless inning and Pulama Silva got the win after retiring the only batter he faced.

Campbell, Russell Doi, and Jordan Inamasu each had two hits for HPU.

HPU and NNU will play the rubber match of the five game set on Monday at 6:00 PM at Hans L'Orange Park.
