Softball Earns Split Against Clan

KANEOHE, HI (February 16, 2013) - After sweeping all four games last weekend against on island opponents, the Hawai'i Pacific (5-1) Softball Team split its doubleheader with visiting Simon Frasier (4-7). HPU dropped game one 2-1 but took game two 6-5 in eight innings.

Freshman Kristen Caskey would get the call on the mound for the Sea Warriors in game one after two complete game shutouts in her first two appearances this season. Caskey would scatter seven hits over seven innings while striking out five.

The Sea Warriors appeared to be on their way to victory in game one taking a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. Caskey would walk the leadoff batter, give up a double to the next and the Sea Warrior lead had evaporated. The Clan would tack on another run on a sacrifice fly, but Caskey would work out of the jam.

HPU got runners to second and third in the bottom of the inning, but could not manage a run.

Keila Elderts led the Sea Warriors going 2-4 from the plate while picking up a pair of steals. Caskey had the lone RBI for HPU.

In game two, the Sea Warrior would find themselves down 6-2 midway through the third inning. HPU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning however, that would make the score 6-4. HPU would pick up one more in the bottom of the fifth after Toni Baysa tripled home Sharae Esprecion.

Down one in the bottom of the seventh, the Sea Warriors would grind out another run to tie the game on a Nicole Morrow Sacrifice fly, scoring Elderts.  Sea Warrior pitcher Melissa Kirby, who got stronger as the game wore on, sat down the Clan 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth inning setting up the stage for HPU to complete the comeback.

Erin Fujita would walk to start the inning for HPU and a Clan error would advance her to third base. Elderts won the game by chopping the ball to third base, scoring Fujita.

Kirby finished with eight innings pitched, giving up six runs, but only two were earned. Elderts again had a strong game going 3-5 with two runs and two RBI.

The HPU women return to the diamond to face Western Oregon on February 19th at Howard A. Okita Field. The game has been changed to 12:00 PM.
