Anton Dominates OT, Women Defeat Azusa on Senior Night

HONOLULU, HI (February 16, 2013)- It was Senior Night for a trio of players on the Hawai'i Pacific (10-4, 14-6) Women's Basketball team at Moanalua High School and the seniors did not disappoint; defeating Azusa Pacific (12-9, 9-4) 74-64 in overtime. The win keeps the Sea Warriors on pace for the second place seed in the PacWest tournament.

The first half would be a back and forth affair that featured five ties and five lead changes. APU would take a one point advantage to the locker room, leading 35-34.

The Sea Warriors managed to hit 14 of 36 (38.9%) shots in the first half including 3-8 from behind the arc. The Cougars were able to hit 48% (12-25) of their shots from the floor in the half, but took 11 fewer shots than HPU thanks in large part to eight offensive Sea Warrior rebounds in the half.

The HPU shooters would not fare much better in the second half as both teams struggled to score in the back and forth affair. HPU trailed by as much as seven points in the half, but a 9-0 run would give them a four point lead with 3:43 to play. The Cougars would chip away at the HPU lead, eventually tying the game, for the eighth time, as time expired in regulation.

As teams often do, the Sea Warriors leaned heavily upon their seniors in overtime. Senior Heidi Anton would lead the way in the extra frame scoring 11 of her 22 points in overtime. Seniors Susannah Walmsley and Melody Ladrido also made keys plays down the stretch, Walmsley with two big rebounds and Ladrido with a pair of fouls shots to help ice the game.

Along with her 22 points, Anton would finish with a game high 14 rebounds as well as a game high five assists. Walmsley would throw in eight points and six boards while Ladrido added 14 points and a pair of steals in her last home game.

Head coach Reid Takatsuka commented on his team's victory on a night where the shots did not come easily, “We really had to grind this one out. We didn't shoot the ball particularly well, but our ability to come together as a team earned us this victory.”

The HPU women will finish their season with four games on the road beginning Monday at UH-Hilo; tip of f is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
