KANEOHE, HI (February 19, 2013)-
Melissa Kirby won her second straight game and
Pomaikai Kalakau hit her second homerun of the year as the Hawai'i Pacific (6-2) Women's Softball team split a double-header against Western Oregon (4-7). HPU would fall in game one 8-5, but rebounded in game two for a 7-3 victory.
In game one, the Sea Warriors looked sharp early, putting three runs on the board in the first inning.
Chante Tesoro led off the game with a double down the left field line and moved to third after an error on a ball put in play by
Keila Elderts. Catcher
Nicole Morrow scored Tesoro on a deep fly ball to right and an
Alysia Maddison double would score Elderts. HPU added one more run in the inning after
Dorian Acierto smashed a double down the left field line to score Maddison.
The Wolves answered by scoring a run in the second inning, two in the third and would break it open with four runs in the fifth. The Sea Warriors found themselves in an 8-3 hole going to the bottom of the seventh.
HPU threatened in the last half inning as Tesoro and Elderts both singled to start the inning. Morrow moved the runners over on a ground ball to first and Tesoro was able to score on a
Caira Pires groundout to second base. Maddison and
Kristen Caskey both singled to load the bases, bringing the winning run to the plate. The Wolves were able to work out of the jam however.
In game two, it was senior
Melissa Kirby who would get the call for HPU on the mound. Kirby spread eight hits over seven innings while only giving up two earned runs to get the victory.
The WOU managed to four hits and two runs against Kirby in the second inning, but she worked out of trouble, forcing a groundout with the bases loaded.
The Sea Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the third when Kalakau led the inning off with a deep home run to straight away center field. Tesoro ripped a triple on the next play and scored on Morrow's fielder's choice two batters later. HPU added runs in the fourth, fifth and three more in the sixth, cruising to a 7-3 victory as Kirby only allowed one hit over the last three innings.
Tesoro finished the day going 4-7 from the plate and scoring four runs while Elderts reached safely in three of her eight chances, scoring three runs and notching a pair of RBI's.
Dorian Acierto finished the day going 5-7, including a 4-4 performance in game one.
The Sea Warriors return to action Saturday February 23rd at Howard A. Okita Field to face BYU-Hawaii in the first PacWest games of the season. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
