ST. GEORGE, UT (February 25, 2013) -
Susannah Walmsley scored 21 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (17-6, 13-4) defeated Dixie St. (13-12, 11-6) by the score of 79-72. The victory marks the first time the HPU women have won in St George in six chances.
Dixie State would jump out to an early 6-0 lead on its senior night, but HPU would battle back to tie the score at 10 just four minutes into the game. The Sea Warriors would use a 10-0 run that included six points from Walmsley to build a 41-35 lead at the break.
In the second half, HPU would not trail as it hung on to its halftime time lead. The Sea Warriors busted the game open with a little over five minutes to play, scoring nine points in a four minute span while holding the Red Storm without a field goal.
Skye Savini and
Melody Ladrido combined to hit five of seven free throws in the final minute to seal the game.
HPU finished shooting 44.8 percent (30-67) from the field including 35 percent (7-20) from three-point range. Defensively, the Sea Warriors held the Red Storm to 38.7% (24-62) from the field.
Ladrido finished with 18 points for the Sea Warriors while Savini added 16. Senior
Heidi Anton had a great all-around game contributing seven points, seven rebounds and six assists in 37 minutes.
The victory is the fourth in a row for HPU and clinches a first round bye in the inaugural PacWest Tournament. The Sea Warriors remain a half game behind Grand Canyon who currently holds the number one seed. HPU would win the tie-breaker if it finished the season tied with GCU.
The HPU women close out the regular season on the road against cross-town rival Chaminade on Saturday; tip-off off is scheduled for 5:00 PM at McCabe Gym.
