WBB Has Way with Hilo

Honolulu, HI (February 2, 2013)- Heidi Anton and Susannah Walmsley each registered double-doubles as the Hawai'i Pacific (12-4, 8-2) women's basketball team cruised to an 88-54 victory against a red-hot University of Hawaii at Hilo (10-7, 7-4) team that came in on a  six-game winning streak.

The game remained close throughout much of the first half. The Sea Warriors broke it open with six minutes remaining, holding the Vulcans to only four points over the final six minutes of the half. Walmsley would follow an Anton steal and layup with a three-pointer giving HPU a 31-18 lead. Forward Mikela  Thoemmes would hit a jumper off a feed from Walmsley right before the half giving HPU a 16 point advantage, 38-22, at the break.

The Sea Warriors would keep the heat on in the second half scoring 50 points while holding UHH to just 32. HPU would finish the game shooting 55.9% from the floor hitting 30 of 59 shots including 45.5% (10-22) from three-point range. The Sea Warriors capped a strong effort from the floor with a solid 12 for 13 (92.3%) effort from the free throw line.
Defensively the Sea Warriors held the Vulcans to 29.8% from the field on 17-57 shooting. The Vulcans hit three of their 15 (20%) shots from behind the arc.

Anton finished the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Walmsley scored 21 to go with 13 rebounds. Ieva Nagy (14) and Melody Ladrido (15) were the other Sea Warriors scoring in double-digits.

After the game Head Coach Reid Takatsuka commented on his team's victory, “This is a good all around team win for us; our team really played well defensively. They (Hilo) came in on a six-game winning streak, so for us to get the victory is big.”

The HPU women return to action on Tuesday against BYU-Hawai'i at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center; game time is scheduled for 7 PM.
