HONOLULU, HI (February 5, 2013)-
Skye Savini scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds as the Hawai'i Pacific (13-3, 9-2) Women's Basketball team coasted to an 87-65 victory against intraisland rival BYU-Hawaii (5-12, 4-7). The victory keeps the Sea Warriors in second place in the PacWest standings.
The Sea Warriors would struggle a bit coming out of the locker room, missing four of their first five shots. HPU would find its groove after the first media timeout however, building a double-digit advantage with 10 minutes to play in the first half. The Sea Warriors would extend the lead out even further, going on a 10-3 run to close out the half that featured six points and two assists from senior guard
Melody Ladrido.
At the break HPU led 44-29 thanks in large part to shooting 52.8% (19-36) from the floor. Defensively the Sea Warriors held BYU-H to just 36% (9-25) while forcing 17 turnovers in the first half.
The second half would look much like the first as the Sea Warriors shot an extremely effective 60% (18-30) from the floor including 55.6% (5-9) from behind the arc. The stout HPU defense held the Seasiders to just 25% (10-40) from the floor including a paltry 18.2% (4-22) from long range.
The Sea Warriors would get 35 points from their bench, 20 of them coming from Ladrido who is averaging 21 points per game over her last five conference games. A total of 10 Sea Warriors scored in the game.
The HPU women return to action Saturday against Point Loma Nazarene at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center; tipoff is at 7 PM.
